oCPS Graduate Course: Communication Systems for CPS
12-16 September 2016 at KTH, Stockholm, Sweden
This course is a PhD level course giving a brief introduction to cyber-physical systems (CPS) and addressing communication technologies in the context of CPS. The focus lies with networking as an integral part of CPS, e.g. in transportation and vehicular systems, power networks and industrial automation. In particular, the communicating parties across these networks require joint timing guarantees and resource management.
Course Objectives:
After completing the course, the students should have obtained the following:
- Knowledge: the students should have a general understanding of what is CPS and which are their key properties and challenges; they should have an overview of relevant networking techniques; they should have studied and understood example applications, and understood the relation between applications requirements and network properties.
- Capabilities: the students have examined networked CPS and are capable of setting up a proper analysis of such systems. They can access relevant literature on the topic.
Course Content Overview:
- Introduction to CPS: motivating applications, key technologies and research challenges
- Organization and real-time communication using (field)buses, with CAN as the example. Typical application organization. Worst case response time analysis.
- Multi-domain real-time networking using real-time ethernet as the example. Time Sensitive Networking and ethernet.
- Wireless networking techniques. Wireless LAN. Safety critical applications in the IEEE 802.11p (vehicle) domain. Scalability, predictability, fairness and priority.
- Low Power and High performance. IEEE 802.15.4, CSMA/CA, slotted communication, Wireless HART.
Course Format:
The course consists of one week of lectures on location at KTH in Stockholm plus a series of small exercises and a 2-week group project. Speakers and industrial partners to be announced.
Organisation:
The academic content of the course is being developed by Johan Lukkien (TU/e), Karl H. Johansson (KTH), Martin Törngren (KTH), Martin Grimheden (KTH) and Lei Feng (KTH).
Places are limited to 30. To express interest in participating, please contact Vicki Derbyshire (vickid@kth.se) by 30 June 2016. A firm commitment of your participation will be required by August 10. 15 oCPS doctoral candidates are guaranteed a place, 15 places to be distributed across oCPS partners. Any non-filled seats fill be assigned after August 10, 2016.
