Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

During my bachelor's studies in Applied Mathematics at the University of Cyprus, I realized I wanted to expand my knowledge beyond mathematics and explore new fields. I became intrigued by the field of cybersecurity, particularly after gaining some experience with cryptography, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This sparked my interest in the broader aspects of cybersecurity and motivated me to pursue this master's at KTH. The programme provides an excellent opportunity to build on my analytical skills while diving deeper into areas like security frameworks and emerging technologies. KTH's focus on innovation and practical learning makes it the ideal place for me to advance in this exciting new path.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

One key difference at KTH is the emphasis on hands-on, practical learning, which complements the theoretical knowledge from my previous studies at the University of Cyprus. At KTH, there is a greater focus on applying concepts in real-world scenarios, especially in cybersecurity, which helps bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practices. The resources at KTH, such as access to cutting-edge research, tools, and a well-equipped library, also provide a richer academic environment. Additionally, KTH fosters a collaborative learning atmosphere with a diverse international student body, which adds to the experience by offering different perspectives on complex topics.

How is student life in Stockholm?

Student life in Stockholm is vibrant and full of opportunities. The city itself is beautiful, with a perfect blend of nature and urban life, making it easy to find a balance between studies and relaxation. There are plenty of student activities, events, and organizations to join, which helps create a strong sense of community. As an international student, you'll find Stockholm very welcoming, with diverse cultures and languages. The public transportation system is excellent, making it easy to explore the city. Additionally, there are countless cafes, parks, and museums to enjoy, and the city's rich history and innovative spirit create an inspiring atmosphere for students.

Have you experienced any culture shock?

When I first arrived in Sweden last January for my Erasmus semester, I definitely experienced culture shock. Coming from Cyprus, the cold weather and shorter daylight hours during the winter were a major adjustment. I was used to the warm, sunny climate back home, so adapting to the long, dark winter took some time. Since I've been back in Sweden since August, I feel more accustomed to the environment. Another noticeable difference was the reserved nature of social interactions in Sweden, which contrasts with the more outgoing culture in Cyprus. However, once I got to know people, I found them to be friendly and welcoming. The cultural differences have enriched my experience and broadened my perspective.
