Giulia

Giulia is 23 and comes from Italy. She is a student of the master's in Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering (COSSE) at KTH. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at the University of Catania, Italy, and did the first year of her master’s at the Technische Universität Berlin in Germany. During her free time, she likes to go for long walks, referee volleyball, and beach volleyball matches, cook and watch films with her family and friends.

Why did you choose this master's programme at KTH?

I was very confused about what path to take in the final year of my bachelor's degree. At the same time, I was looking for something that would allow me to continue being close to the world of mathematics and give me the skills I needed to use my knowledge to help others. Therefore, I discovered the COSSE master's programme, which offers you the opportunity to strengthen your skills in the field of Computational and Engineering Sciences (CSE), making your path multidisciplinary and suited to the current development of society.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

The best aspect of my course is its interdisciplinarity. The compulsory courses in the first year are courses that give you the basics and the opportunity to later specialize in the area you prefer. With this master’s programme, you have a great opportunity to choose your specialisation, which can be the field of physics, machine learning, bioinformatics, mathematical analysis, or something else! In addition, compulsory mobility is a great way to become part of two completely different cultures, thus broadening your horizons and getting to know different ways of life, which will make your studies full of opportunities to grow and improve!

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

The studies at KTH are completely different from those I took during my bachelor's degree, both in the structure of the course of study and in the way it is approached. Here there is a basic idea that encourages team working, which is fundamental, and in every course, there is always an application component that makes you see the real-life applications of what you are studying and the potential of the theoretical tools you are learning.

How is student life in Stockholm?

Student life in Stockholm is a life full of opportunities. During your studies, the university will not only offer psychological support in case of stress, and exam anxiety, etc., but also an array of extracurricular activities that will enrich your knowledge and personality. As a student, you can find drama, singing, and music clubs, sports activities, language courses, and other events that will make your studies more enjoyable. The people are very friendly, and there is always someone available to help you in case of difficulty.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

I would describe my time at KTH as highly formative, both from a technical point of view, through the courses offered by the university, and from a human point of view. I had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world who introduced me to their culture and way of thinking. Furthermore, I have had the opportunity to come into contact with a reality that seeks to unite students and make them feel at home and stimulated to do more and more.

What do you want to do after graduating?

Most probably after graduation, I would like to continue my academic career in the field of optimization by pursuing a doctorate. I haven't decided yet whether to do a classical doctorate or a business doctorate, but I am quite convinced that I want to stay in contact with KTH and Stockholm.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master's studies?

I believe that choosing KTH as your university for your studies is one of the best choices you can make to better yourself. This university is full of many good opportunities that stimulate students' interest and curiosity. One is attentive to the needs and requirements of individual students and is supported along one's path from the beginning. This choice has changed and improved my life and I am happy I made it; I would advise everyone to do the same!
