Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
During my bachelor's studies in Computer Science, I got interested in Machine Learning. I did several internships and student jobs to learn more about different Machine Learning algorithms and applications. There, I got some hands-on experience and an idea on how many ways I could use Machine Learning algorithms. Therefore, I decided to get a master's in Machine Learning to deepen my knowledge and gain a better theoretical understanding. When looking at universities offering this programme, I came across KTH. I instantly felt that KTH would be a good fit because I wanted to study abroad, and Sweden has always fascinated me. Furthermore, KTH has an impressive reputation and great rankings, especially in my study area.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
My favourite courses have been Deep Learning in Data Science and Regression Analysis. In both courses, there was a good balance between getting the theoretical foundation for the respective topic and getting some hands-on experience. Especially in the course Deep Learning in Data Science, we also had the opportunity to explore current methods and suggest our solution strategies for a given problem, which was a valuable learning experience. What incredibly intrigued me about the course Regression Analysis was that we had the opportunity to solve a real-world problem provided by an insurance company. This gave me an idea of how to apply the knowledge I acquired in my studies to industrial applications, which I found to be good preparation for my professional life.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
Studying at KTH differs quite a lot from my study experience at my previous university. First of all, the academic year is differently structured, such that it consists of 2 periods per semester, meaning four periods a year. My previous university academic year was only split into two semesters. Due to the different structure, I usually have fewer courses simultaneously and for a shorter period. This allows me to focus more intensely on each class which I enjoy. Furthermore, at KTH, I often have many more group projects than exams, which I find valuable as it allows me to apply the knowledge from the lectures with different people
How is student life in Stockholm?
Student life in Stockholm never gets boring and holds something for everyone. The city offers a lot to explore as there are many museums, cafes and beautiful places around the city. Additionally, many events and activities are season-specific, e.g., ice skating areas that open in winter or the Hornstull market that takes place during the summer, so there is always something new to explore. Furthermore, around Stockholm, there are many beautiful natural places, such as the archipelago or national parks which are relatively easy to access from Stockholm and offer many opportunities for different outdoor activities.
How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
My time at KTH so far has been a great learning experience not only in terms of the knowledge I have acquired in my studies but also due to learning about a new culture and making new friends from all over the world. In my first year of studying, I made a lot of great memories with my new friends here. For example, going to the sauna in Osqvik, the Royal Opera or enjoying Swedish spring at the many beaches here. Furthermore, during the many opportunities to connect with companies, I developed a more precise idea of what I want to do once I start working.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
If you are considering studying at KTH, I recommend doing so. Not also is KTH one of the top universities in Scandinavia. Still, it also has a great student culture and offers many opportunities to connect with companies during your studies. Furthermore, you will be well supported during all the challenges of studying at a new university.
