Christos
Christos comes from Greece, now studying the Machine Learning Masters at KTH’s main campus. Before coming to Sweden, he completed his Electrical and Computer Engineering Integrated Masters at the University of Patras. He's really into baking, so Swedish Fika is an absolute joy for him! Besides that, you can catch him listening to music, taking long walks around Stockholm with friends and learning all sorts of niche trivia about the world.
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
I’ve always been passionate about data and artificial intelligence. So Machine Learning was a natural fit for me, and what better place to study ML than KTH? With Stockholm being one of the most significant innovation hubs worldwide, exciting opportunities are abundant. KTH also ranks globally in Computer Science, making it a great place to meet driven and knowledgeable people who will motivate you to push your boundaries further and grow as an engineer. Lastly, Sweden’s welcoming culture and tolerant society were a big plus for my decision to study here.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
I am interested in Deep Learning, and in the Machine Learning programme, many courses are dedicated to the subject. The highlight of those has been Deep Learning for Data Science. This is a must-take course for anyone who is into exciting technologies in the field, like CNNs, GANs, etc. I also have to mention Neuroscience, as I got the chance to attend a Neuroanatomy demonstration at Karolinska and take a peek into the secrets of how the human brain works.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
At KTH, professors put a much great emphasis on collaborative projects. This gives you a fantastic opportunity to get some hands-on experience. You will also get the chance to pick a lot of elective courses and chart your academic path; choosing what you want to focus on grants you much freedom to specialise and differentiate yourself from other people in your field. If you see a unique combination of skills you want to cultivate, KTH is the place to do so. The final big difference is the international environment. I have met students from so many different backgrounds, which has greatly enriched my student life experience.
How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
In a word, transformative. I don’t think I have had the chance to grow so much in such a time, advance in my field knowledge, land my first job and meet exciting people with fresh perspectives. The experience of moving to another country has also been a potent driver for me to grow as a person and discover other cultures.
What would you like to say to students considering choosing KTH for master’s studies?
Simply put, take this chance! Machine Learning is one of the fastest-growing fields in the modern digital economy. In Stockholm, you will find a European version of Silicon Valley, with innovation hubs, big companies and start-ups pushing things forward. You will also get to work with very knowledgeable (but still down-to-earth) professors and possibly get involved in some exciting research projects developed here at KTH. And you can have all of that in Stockholm's thriving, diverse and welcoming city.
