Master's programmes in Engineering Sciences

KTH offers 11 master's programmes within the fields of mathematics, physics and applied mechanics, combining strong science fundamentals with cutting-edge engineering.

Aerospace Engineering

The programme fosters skilled engineers for careers in the international aerospace sector and related fields. The programme offers specialisation in Aeronautics, Space, Lightweight Structures and Systems Engineering. Graduates have a solid theoretical foundation in aerospace modelling, analysis and design, as well as teamworking skills and a general ability to approach and solve complex engineering tasks.

Applied and Computational Mathematics

The programme fosters skilled applied mathematicians, well-prepared for advanced industrial positions or PhD studies. It offers four tracks: Computational Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Optimisation and Systems Theory, and Mathematics of Data Science. Graduates acquire skills in advanced mathematics and computer simulation that are in demand in several important fields.

Biostatistics and Data Science

The programme offers a unique combination of Biostatistics and Data Science. Students with backgrounds in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related disciplines, are provided with the skills to solve problems in Biology, Medicine, and Public Health. The programme is offered jointly by KTH, Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University.

Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering (Joint)

The programme focuses on the multidisciplinary field of Computational Science and Engineering, an enabling technology for scientific discovery and engineering design. It involves applied mathematics, mathematical modelling, numerical analysis, computer science, high-performance computing and visualisation. The programme is highly research-oriented, and two-thirds of graduates go on to PhD studies at leading universities worldwide.

Engineering Mechanics

The programme provides a solid and up-to-date knowledge base for the analysis and design of products and processes. Students learn to use advanced simulation and experimental methods to analyse mechanical phenomena ranging from lightweight gases to solid materials. Graduates work in numerous branches with design, testing, computation and research as managers, engineers, consultants, or researchers.

Engineering Physics

The programme bridges the gap between theoretical physics and practical engineering, seeking to develop future technology. Solving complex problems is an integral part of the education, demanding in-depth knowledge of physics, as well as analytical and computational tools. Through specialisations, students become domain experts in one field of physics and go on to advanced industrial R&D positions or PhD studies.

Mathematics (Joint)

The programme is hosted by world-leading experts and research groups at KTH and Stockholm University. Students specialise in their desired areas of mathematics while acquiring essential skills in problem-solving and logical reasoning. Graduates become industrial mathematicians, often data analysts, financial analysts or within software engineering, or go on to PhD studies at prominent institutions.

Naval Architecture

The programme provides a strong foundation in Naval Architecture while delivering in-depth skills through specialisations in Lightweight Structures, Fluid Mechanics and Management. You will explore the complete processes of designing, modelling, constructing and operating boats, ships, marine installations and systems. Graduates face careers in the maritime sector, related fields or academia.

Nuclear Energy Engineering

The programme covers all aspects of nuclear engineering, including physics and technology of nuclear reactors, nuclear power safety and radiation protection. You will learn how to design, operate, manage and develop nuclear facilities. Graduates also develop the future of nuclear power engineering with expertise in generation IV reactors and small modular reactors.

Railway Engineering

The programme explores railways from a systems perspective, blending mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. You will study at KTH and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and learn to design vehicles, infrastructure and control systems for safe, efficient and sustainable transportation. Investments in railways are rising worldwide to decarbonise passenger transport and freight, creating a vast demand for skilled railway engineers.

Vehicle Engineering

The programme covers all aspects from vehicle design, functions and dynamic properties, to systems for safety and comfort, and vehicles as part of the transport systems. Students can specialise in Automotive or Rail vehicles. Graduates have global career opportunities and the skills to contribute to innovative and sustainable solutions that minimise the vehicle industry's environmental impact.
