Julian

Julian comes from Colombia. Before coming to Sweden, he completed his bachelor's in mechanical engineering at the National University of Colombia Sede Medellín. In his free time, he enjoys playing video games and trading card games (like Yu Gi Oh!), watching anime, and playing sports such as Basketball, Rugby, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Ask Julian a question

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

I worked for about a year as a project manager in the naval industry, and that experience just confirmed to me that the path I want to follow as a naval engineer is a more creative one. So I said, "Ok, Julian, where can you study a great ship design programme, experience absolutely new things for you (like a real winter), and be able to speak English fluently?… KTH was a no-brainer after a good alternatives check.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

I love the fact that we can choose the path we want to get more into, be it structural design, fluid dynamics or management. This allows every student to have a very personalized programme and follow their true desires/interests. Also, c'mon!! Boats are fun and interesting! So, how would I not love learning more about them?

Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme?

I chose the lightweight structure path. I did it because, in my bachelor's degree, the structural behaviour analysis of mechanical components was my favourite part of all my studies; with this track selection, I´ll be able to do it in complex situations and employ top engineering materials, like composites, making future employment opportunities very interesting for me.

What are some of your favourite courses so far?

I've not seen many courses, but I'm really enjoying Marine Structures so far. Modelling the structural behaviour of a ship's main structure is really interesting for me, and I'm more than eager to discover all the nice courses I have ahead of me!

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

I feel that the way in which you can mould your career path is quite unique to KTH's studying method. Also, the professors encourage us to go beyond the classroom content and do our own work centred on real-life problems, which is more motivating than a theory-only-based education.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

As we say in my language, increíble. I'm amazed at the number of activities organized by the University, student groups, or even the city because it is impressive! Expect a top-quality education, an inclusive space, an international experience (I've made friends from all around the world, so prepare yourself for the number of holiday trip invitations, haha), and a lot of fun and opportunities.

Is there any student events/associations that you enjoy and can recommend?

I joined the rowing team, which has been super cool, but I can say that the number of choices you'll have can be even a bit overwhelming. So take your time, make a list, and choose something you know you will enjoy! But for sure, don´t miss the chance to at least try something new!!

Have you experienced any culture shock?

Well honestly, I did not come directly from my country, so I'm now a bit adapted to a European lifestyle, but here I leave a couple of things that made me wow at Stockholm: the respect for pedestrians and bicycles is TOP; also the number of bicycle lanes, it's a true bikeable city. And “Fika” this one, of course, could not miss the list. If you don´t know what it is, imagine the perfect excuse for a small work break where you will enjoy a good warm coffee with delicious pastry at any time of the day!

What do you want to do after graduating?

I'm expecting to stay here, at least in the middle term. It's an impressive environment for naval design, so I'll be looking for jobs next year, and who knows, maybe I will fall in love (more) with Scandinavia and make it my definite living spot. I'm aware that life can change when you less expect, and I've done it a lot lately (as this is the fourth country I've lived in less than a year), but honestly, I want to chill a bit, and so far I've felt Sweden as a great place to do it.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?

Go for it; if you found one of our programs that really captivated you, just do it! You will never regret it.

During your application period, what was the most useful resource that you got from KTH?

The website was very useful; there are many nice descriptions of how to complete all the application processes. Also, I would advise anyone to sign up for the webinars! They're a great chance to solve some of the missing items on the webpage and ask questions to staff or active students.
