Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
The focus on project work, the research collaborations with Karolinska Institutet and the location were the main reasons why I chose the Medical Engineering master's programme. Spoiler Alert: I was not disappointed!
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
I enjoyed most of the courses I took at KTH, but the following were my favourites:
Statistics for Medical Engineering (CM2018): The seminars in this course were particularly exciting as they involved working with real databases and challenging questions. I had the opportunity to learn various statistical methods and understand their applications in different scenarios. The biggest eye-opener, however, was the power of the R programming language for data visualisation. Before this course, I hadn't really programmed using R at all, but through the seminars, I learned so many different techniques. It made data visualisation easy!
Project Carrier Courses (CM2015, CM2016 and CM2017): These courses were incredibly engaging and provided hands-on learning experiences. In one project, we built a heart rate monitor from scratch, which allowed us to dive deep into the technical aspects of hardware and software integration. Most recently, we undertook a project where we built an iOS application, immersing ourselves in the development process, and gaining valuable experience in mobile applications and how iPhone sensors can be used. These project courses exposed me to various aspects of different health systems and technologies, providing a holistic understanding in just one year.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
I have noticed a couple of differences between KTH and my previous studies. Here at KTH, the professors encourage us to think beyond the ordinary. They challenge us to explore unconventional approaches and promote discussions on the same. Having assignments that push us to expand our problem-solving skills and think innovatively is refreshing. Another key difference is the emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. Many of our courses incorporate real-world applications, going beyond just theoretical knowledge. Most of our courses had a project part which involved solving real-world problems and presenting our solutions. This practical approach deepened my understanding of the subject matter and equipped me with valuable skills for real-world implementation.
How is student life in Stockholm?
Student life in Stockholm offers a vibrant and diverse experience catering to various interests and passions. The city is a haven for students, providing a perfect blend of academic opportunities and recreational activities. For avid readers like myself, Stockholm is a paradise with its 290 public libraries. You can borrow books from all these libraries with one card, which you get for free! Also, THS, our student union, is significant in fostering student engagement. Throughout the year, they organise many events, such as after-exam parties called "Tentapubs," providing students with opportunities to unwind and socialise. And finally, nature enthusiasts will find delight in Stockholm's beautiful trails and outdoor spaces. The city offers numerous scenic hiking routes, allowing students to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes. Additionally, the public transport system in Stockholm is exceptional, offering seamless connectivity across the city. As a student, you can benefit from discounted transport tickets, making exploring every corner of Stockholm easier. Overall, Stockholm offers the perfect balance between city life and nature. Students can enjoy the vibrant city atmosphere, with its cultural events, restaurants, and entertainment options while having easy access to the tranquillity of nature.
