Ask Soham a question

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

Choosing the Engineering Mechanics master's programme at KTH, specialising in Solid Mechanics, was a natural step for me. With a background in mechanical engineering and experience in projects related to structural design and simulation, I wanted to dive deeper and improve my understanding of mechanics. KTH's reputation for excellence in engineering education convinced me that it was the right place to continue my studies. I recognised that studying here would give me access to esteemed faculty, cutting-edge resources, and ample opportunities for academic and professional growth. The programme's reputation for providing in-depth education and rigorous training in solid mechanics further supported my decision.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

One of the standout features of our programme is its emphasis on collaboration. We are encouraged to work closely with our peers, sharing ideas, tackling challenges together, and learning from each other's perspectives. This collaborative environment enriches our learning experience. Another great thing is that the work we do feels real. The projects and lab exercises are designed to be relevant to what's happening in the industry. This means we are learning things we can use when we start our careers. Also, having our own track room dedicated to studying is a fantastic resource. It provides a quiet, dedicated space to focus on our coursework, collaborate with classmates, and have Fika together. These aspects combine to create a dynamic and supportive learning environment that equips us with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in our field.

How is student life in Stockholm?

Student life in Stockholm is vibrant and dynamic, offering a mix of academic challenges and opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment. One of the perks of being a student here is the special prices for public transportation offered by SL, making it affordable and convenient to explore the city and beyond. This is especially helpful considering Stockholm's extensive public transportation network, which connects students to various parts of the city and even some islands! Moreover, students can take advantage of numerous discounts available at various establishments, ranging from restaurants to cultural venues. These discounts help stretch the student budget and make it easier to enjoy leisure activities without breaking the bank. Student accommodations also play a significant role in making student life more affordable. Many students opt for student housing, which not only saves money but also fosters a sense of community among residents. While studies in Stockholm can be challenging and sometimes stressful, there are plenty of opportunities to unwind. Chapter pubs provide a relaxed atmosphere where students can socialize with friends, enjoy a drink, and de-stress after a long day of studying. These establishments often host events and activities, adding to the vibrant social scene of student life in Stockholm.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

Studying at KTH has been quite different from my previous university experience. In India, exams were the norm for every course, but here at KTH, things vary. Some courses have exams, while others focus on projects or reports, it depends on what the professor thinks is best. One big change is how much we work together. At my previous university (VIT Vellore), it was more about individual effort, but here, teamwork is a big deal. Collaborating with classmates on assignments has not only helped me understand the courses better but also made me some great friends along the way. Overall, the mix of assessment methods and the emphasis on teamwork at KTH have made my learning experience richer and more practical. Studying at KTH has brought some interesting changes compared to my previous university experience. One thing that took some getting used to is the friendly atmosphere, especially referring to everyone by their first names. It was a bit of a shift from the more formal approach I was used to, but it quickly became natural and cultivated a friendlier environment.

Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? If Yes, which track and why?

Yes, I have chosen the Solid Mechanics track within the program. During my bachelor's, I had the opportunity to work extensively on various projects related to structural and design engineering within a student team. These experiences not only honed my technical skills but also ignited a deep interest in understanding the underlying principles governing the behaviour of materials and structures under different conditions. Solid Mechanics felt like a natural progression for me given my background and experience in this area. Moreover, I see solid mechanics as a fundamental aspect of various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, civil, aerospace, and materials engineering. By specializing in this track, I aim to enhance my knowledge and pursue career opportunities in fields where a strong foundation in solid mechanics is essential.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

My time at KTH so far has been incredibly rewarding and enriching. The academic environment is stimulating, with engaging courses and opportunities to delve deep into subjects I am passionate about. Outside of academics, Stockholm offers a vibrant and diverse cultural scene, providing countless opportunities for exploration and enjoyment. From exploring the city's historic landmarks to immersing myself in its rich cultural offerings, there's always something new to discover. Moreover, the supportive community at KTH has made my transition smooth and enjoyable. Whether it's seeking guidance from professors or connecting with fellow students, I have found a welcoming environment that has made my transition smooth and rewarding. Overall, my time at KTH has been characterized by growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences, and I look forward to continuing to make the most of my time here.
