Regina
Regina is from Monterrey, Mexico. Before coming to Sweden, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Tec de Monterrey. Then, she worked as a machine learning engineer for one year, and now she is starting the Master's programme in biostatistics and data science. She enjoys cooking, painting, and participating in student life.
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
I chose this programme because perfectly combines my passion for working with data in the medical field with the theoretical foundations I was missing from my biomedical engineering background. The opportunity to study at three of Sweden's top universities, KTH, Stockholm University and Karolinska Institutet, was also a significant draw.
How is student life in Stockholm?
I'm loving life in Stockholm! The city's vibrant culture and beautiful scenery make it an ideal place to study. I've enjoyed exploring the city's many events and activities, from events organized by THS to outdoor adventures. The student community at KTH is also very welcoming, with a great atmosphere and many opportunities to get involved in its many events.
How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
I've been really enjoying my time at KTH so far. The programme has been challenging but in a good way! It has pushed me to work harder and think more critically. I've appreciated the supportive learning environment and the opportunity to learn from experienced professors. Adjusting to life in Sweden has been a fun adventure, and I'm excited to see what the rest of my time here holds.
Are there any differences between studying at KTH and your home university?
I've noticed significant differences between studying at KTH and my home university. One of the main differences is the emphasis on theoretical foundations at KTH, which I lacked in my previous studies. Additionally, the academic system in Sweden is more focused on individual effort and responsibility, which has been a positive change for me. It's also surprising how much trust is placed in you, as a student, in KTH. This approach helps you focus on your learning rather than feeling pressured to pass exams.
What do you want to do after graduating?
After graduating, I hope to work as a data scientist or biostatistician in the medical field, applying the skills and knowledge I've gained at KTH. I'm open to exploring different opportunities, including academia, but my primary goal is to make a meaningful impact in the healthcare industry.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master's studies?
I would highly recommend KTH for master's studies. If you're doubting whether to go, I assure you it's totally worth it. The quality of education is excellent, the school system is always helpful, and moving to a different country is an adventure that will not only develop you academically but also allow you to grow as a person. The campus is also breathtakingly beautiful! If you're considering KTH, I say go for it—you won't regret it!
