Entry requirements for Architecture

To be eligible for the master's programme in Architecture, you must meet the listed admission requirements and submit the documents required in your application. We will assess your application according to the selection criteria set for the programme. The same process applies to students with a bachelor's degree from a Swedish university.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree

Academic qualifications from an internationally recognised university equivalent to a Swedish bachelor's degree.

Students in their final year of bachelor's studies can meet the requirement it they follow the instructions from University Admissions . Final-year students at Swedish universities must have completed 150 ECTS credits in their programme by 3 February.

English proficiency

English proficiency equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

You can meet the requirement with an English test, for example an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 90. Depending on your country of previuous studies you could also meet the requirement through completed upper secondary or university studies. Specific requirements for Architecture

A bachelor’s degree in Architecture corresponding to 180 ECTS credits or equivalent.

The student has to present a portfolio that demonstrates the necessary skills and the ability to make use of the education as well as independence in utilizing adequate methodology to implement and evaluate architecture projects by the following criteria:

  1. Building complexity
  2. Development of project/ level of sophistication
  3. Technical aspects
  4. Design and aesthetics
  5. Theoretical, historical and contemporary context
  6. Portfolio layout

Official transcript of courses and grades completed in your degree. Students from Swedish universities that use Ladok do not need to submit degree certificates or transcripts.

A copy of passport with personal data and photograph, or other identification document.

Portfolio

A portfolio should be uploaded via Sharepoint. Make sure to strictly follow the instructions, otherwise your application will be marked as incomplete.

  • Format: PDF
  • Size: maximum size of 15 MB, no more than 9 pages + 1 page cover sheet, single-sided, not spreaded. No requirements regarding page size. Landscape A format is recommended. No wider than 16:9 format. Please keep in mind that each page has to be readable both as printed in A3 format as well as displayed on a laptop screen, make your work accessible to our reviewers.
  • Minimum 3-4 projects, preferably no group work.
  • Anonymous portfolio: Do not include your name anywhere in the portfolio. Include your 8-digit application number on the first page of the portfolio instead. Do not mix up the 8-digit application number with the programme code (E0121).
  • File name: The file name should be the same as the application number. Example: 75387612.pdf. Please note: Sharepoint adds a prefix that identifies who uploaded the file. However, your name will be removed from the file before the portfolio is assessed. Only your application number will be visible for the jury.
  • Content: The portfolio should only present the applicant’s educational projects, no projects from work experience/internships are accepted. The projects included should be correctly titled:
    • state your home university
    • state during which year of the studies the project was done
    • indicate if the work has been produced by the applicant alone or in collaboration

Upload your portfolio via Sharepoint

Instructions:

Submit your portfolio in support of your application to MSc Architecture through the Sharepoint link. First, you will be asked to select the file that you want to submit.

After you have selected your file, a prefix with the uploaders name will appear. However, please note that we will remove any name from your file and only keep the application number. You can also view the file size. Please remember that the maximum file size is 15 mb. Click on “Upload”.

After you have uploaded your file, you will receive a message that you are “Finished uploading”. This confirms that we now have received your portfolio.

If you can not upload via Sharepoint, please email your portfolio to master@arch.kth.se .

Selection criteria

The selection is based on the portfolio. The evaluation scale is 1-75.

Acceptance rate

The acceptance rate for the master's programme in Architecture for 2024 was 21 %. We admitted 104 students out of the 492 applicants that met the admission requirements. To increase your chances of getting admitted to KTH, we advise you to select more than one programme when applying. You can apply for up to four programmes and rank them in your order of preference.

Recognition of prior learning

Suppose you entirely or partially lack a formal requirement for a course or programme, but you believe you have the necessary knowledge to meet the requirement. In that case, you can apply for recognition of prior learning .
