Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Physical properties of superconductors, London theory, vortices in type-II superconductors, vortex dynamics, Bean's model, Josephson transitions, quantum interference, SQUID, Ginzburg-Landau theory, BCS theory, applications of superconductivity, introduction to other types of quantum fluids (superfluid helium and Bose.Einstein condensate).

Intended learning outcomes

After finished course the student should be able to:

  • apply basic theory and concepts of superconductivity
  • analyze and evaluate superconducting applications
  • apply basic concepts for other quantum fluids

  • IMU1 - Hand-in-problems with final oral exam, 4.5 credits, Grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

IMU1 - Hand-in-problems with final oral exam, 4.5 credits

This part of the examination contains three parts that are examined continuously during the course.

  1. individual quizzes in Canvas
  2. individual hand-in problems
  3. group hand-in problems

 To be eligible to take the final oral exam, you must have passed all three of these examinations. Your achievements on these exams may limit the maximum grade you can get on the final oral exam.

PRO1 - Project, 3.0 credits

This examination consists of two parts:

Project A – Group project to evaluate a superconducting application

Project B – Individual project to study a specific subject within the field

Each project is examined through a short written report (2-3 pages).

Opportunity to raise an approved grade via renewed examination

The oral exam can be retaken once, but this must occur within a 4 month period after the scheduled date for the oral exam. Other parts of the examination can not be retaken if a pass grade (A-E) has been given. 

Ethical approach

  • In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
  • In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
