Doctoral Program in Engineering Mechanics
Mechanics is one of the four classical physics areas (optics, electromagnetism and thermodynamics are the rest) and, of course, are an essential part of all education in science and engineering. It includes all parts of an industrial design process based on advanced mechanical analysis of product behavior and functionality.

- Fluid mechanics
- Structural mechanics
Courses
The doctoral program in Engineering Mechanics consists of a compulsory course and conditionally elective and elective courses. At least two of the conditionally elective courses must be included in the doctoral degree in engineering mechanics. There are courses in three areas: acoustics, structural and biomechanics, and flow mechanics, which largely reflect the research profile of the research groups within the program.
At KTH’s department, a number of subject-specific courses at the doctoral level are also regularly offered, which are optional. Other courses at the research level provided by other department or universities can also be included in the course section. The main supervisor and the postgraduate student shall, in consultation, plan the courses so that both a depth within the dissertation area and a certain width within the field of science are obtained. In addition, courses in science theory and research methodology can be included. A part of this is considered to be a natural part of other courses offered under the doctoral program.
More information about the courses can be found in the general subject study plan.

Aims
The objectives of the Doctoral Program in Engineering Mechanics follow the common objectives of postgraduate education according to the Higher Education Ordinance (1993: 100).
These goals are divided into three categories:
- Knowledge and understanding
- Skills and abilities
- Ability to make judgments and adopt a standpoint.
A concrete description of how these goals can be met within the framework of the doctoral program are described in the general subject study plan.
Previous knowledge
Basic eligibility complies with the general stated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993: 100). As a special qualification for admission to postgraduate education in the subject of aerospace engineering, the applicant must have:
- Completed basic competencies in the area, or
- In some other way, within or outside the country, acquired the corresponding relevant knowledge in the relevant areas.
The application process
In order to apply for a doctoral program, there must be an available doctoral appointment. On KTH's central website, a list of all KTH's vacancies, including doctoral posts, is published.
