Research areas

The doctoral program in Applied Physics comprises studies in the fields of Biological physics or Physics. Physics is organized in three broad research areas:

  • Materials and nanophysics
  • Optics and photonics
  • Biological and biomedical physics
  • Quantum technology

Courses

The courses to be included in the program should be based on the prior knowledge of the doctoral student and on the knowledge and skills deemed necessary for the implementation of the dissertation work and in order to achieve the program goals. To ensure that all formal requirements for doctoral degrees are met, the doctoral student will be examined in the only compulsory course of the program, SH3000 Width and Ethics in Physics, 7.5 credits.

A large number of courses are offered within the Doctoral Program in Applied Physics, but the student may, in consultation with his principal supervisor, also choose other courses within or outside KTH to meet the knowledge requirements deemed necessary for the dissertation work. In particular, it is recommended to take courses in related doctoral programs at KTH and courses available through collaboration with Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University.

More information about the courses can be found in the general subject study plan.

Aims

The objectives of the Doctoral Program in Applied Physics follow the common objectives of postgraduate education according to the Higher Education Ordinance (1993: 100).

These goals are divided into three categories:

  1. Knowledge and understanding
  2. Skills and abilities
  3. Ability to make judgments and adopt a standpoint.

A concrete description of how these goals can be met within the framework of the doctoral program are described in the general subject study plan.

Previous knowledge

Basic eligibility complies with the general stated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993: 100). As a special qualification for admission to postgraduate education in the subject of physics, the applicant must have:

  1. Completed basic competencies in the area, or
  2. In some other way, within or outside the country, acquired the corresponding relevant knowledge in the relevant areas.

The application process

In order to apply for a doctoral program, there must be an available doctoral appointment. On KTH's central website, a list of all KTH's vacancies, including doctoral posts, is published.
