Professor of Automatic control with emphasis on transportation systems
Jonas Mårtensson’s research focuses on connected and automated transport systems and how these systems can improve road safety, transport efficiency and sustainability. The free movement of people and transport of goods and commodities from producers to consumers are prerequisites of modern society.
At the same time, all this comes at the cost of road accidents, congestion, noise, air pollution and, not least, large emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Many of these issues can be alleviated with reliable, timely access to various sensor data and new technologies that are capable of maneuvering individual vehicles automatically, optimising the transport of large fleets and controlling entire traffic systems.
Jonas and his research team have, for example, studied how trucks can drive more energy-effectively by planning their speed level in accordance with road profiles, traffic lights and other vehicles. They have also studied how transports can be coordinated in automated truck platoons with low air-drag friction.
To make transports more effective with the help of automation it is also important to have a connected infrastructure where driving support services and data can be made available, both in the form of automated functions and artificial intelligence, and for the human operators who monitor and control the transport system.
