Sustainable Food Production
Knowledge is needed that goes beyond conventional land-based rural production of food. The integration and links between urban and rural areas in terms of food production and consumption needs to be understood from several aspects.
For example, municipalities will have to take on a role in food planning, in interaction with other food actors on the local level. Also, new food producers and food production modes are emerging: farmers from urban areas with other types of backgrounds than traditional farmers, and/or using innovative production and distribution methods, both in rural and urban areas.
KTH is leading the newly formed Blue Food Centre, focusing on sustainable production and industrial processes related to marine foods (algae, fish). There are also initiatives in urban agriculture, mainly together with IVL and Stockholm City, and within the Viable Cities Strategic Innovation Program. The KTH water centre is involved in the Swedish Nutrient Platform, which is a collaborative effort between research and water companies to improve recycling of nutrients in society. Circularity of resources at different scales and in different areas is also included in this theme, which could be included in KTH FOOD.
