The Harmony of Noise
The project concerns developing a notation system for pitch-based, sound-based and spatialized music in an attempt to bridge the gap between acoustic and electronic music, also working towards the possibility of a holistic system for algorithmic composition based on music representation.
The starting point has been to combine traditional staff-based music notation with concepts and symbols from electroacoustic music analysis making it possible to describe sounds with pitch and sounds without pitch within the same system.
The first studies have been conducted with composition students at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm working with this new notation in the course module in Sonology. Combining well-established systems for representation of music has shown to be an intuitive approach to the visualisation of musical structures of sound and pitch.
