Xuehua
Xuehua is from Wuhan, China. She studied computational mathematics at Sun Yat-sen University in China. She enjoys painting and playing music in her spare time. She is also a big fan of Science Fiction!
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
Computer Science to me is like mathematics applied in a special aspect of reality. It studies the information layer of the real world and creates a virtual world for humans and for me to dive in.
Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme?
I wondered and eventually chose the Visualisation and Interactive Graphics track at the start of period two. Now I think this track is a perfect fit for me because I have a great passion for studying human perception, and that’s exactly what people are doing in many courses and projects within this track.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
Music Acoustics is definitely one of my favourite courses so far. I’ve always been thinking about how voices work in human bodies and to what extent computer programs can do to imitate human voices. This course offered me a wonderful guided tour within the area I’ve always been curious about. My final project was based on a super cool idea about synthesising a choir sound by imitating the real random “beating” in chorus singing.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
The most surprising and different thing is that students are allowed to explore almost whatever they are interested in course selection. KTH has great flexibility in course selection, so I had the chance to experience many amazing topics and implement many exciting ideas that I always wanted to try—like developing a game. Another big difference is that courses here are more graded based on exercises and projects than a single written exam, which is good because it lets students thoroughly enjoy the course content by experimenting with the theory.
What do you want to do after graduating?
I want to pursue a PhD degree in the future in exploring human perception with computer technology.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
Just open your mind and embrace all the possibilities here at KTH!
