"I've come to terms with the fact that everything goes well with Fika"
Rohin hails from the southern state of Kerala in India. He graduated from College of Engineering, Trivandrum, worked as an Applications Developer at Oracle and joined KTH for the master's programme in Computer Science. He enjoys photography, and he is also a casual PC gamer.
What made you choose KTH?
Being one of the most reputed and ranked universities in Europe, choosing KTH was a rather easy decision. KTH is also known for producing some of the most employable candidates, mostly because of the way the courses are structured and taught. The flexibility in course structure also lets us be creative in our study plan. Being skilled in data science has become a must-have, and the school of computer science and communication offers quite a diverse array of courses to specialise in data science, along with a team of brilliant professors who are passionate about what they do.
What are your impressions of Stockholm and Sweden?
Stockholm is definitely one of the most beautiful cities I have visited. The archipelagos, the old town, the national parks, fancy restaurants and the countless museums are really incredible. "Allemansrätten" or "the everyman's right" which grants the freedom to roam is sure to please the wanderlust in everyone. In other words, if you like photography, then buckle up!
Stockholm has one of the best public transport systems I have ever seen. In fact, a high percentage of the population uses public transport when compared to other nations with similar development index. The way the city deals with snowfall during heavy winter is truly impressive. Speaking of winter, last year, some of us were lucky enough to see the northern lights from Stockholm.
I've also come to terms with the fact that everything goes well with Fika!
What do you like most about KTH?
Apart from the exceptional courses, the campus and the facilities provided to the students are top notch. The campus looks wonderful, especially during summer. Everyone speaks excellent English in case your Swedish speaking skills need polishing. The amount of support and encouragement given to new ideas and start-ups is quite remarkable.
What do you like most about being here?
The international setting of the classes, the cultural diversity and varied ideas of people and the flexibility in selecting the courses in the way we like it are just some of the things I love. Our perception of the world changes when we meet people from different parts of the globe.
What is your best memory so far from your time at KTH?
The first experience of snowfall is something I will definitely treasure.
What do you think are the differences between studying at KTH and your home university?
The differences are vast. The bachelor's studies back in India had a rigid structure with more weight on theory whereas KTH offers much greater flexibility to choose project courses or courses that let you experiment with ideas you always wanted to develop. And then there are the 5-hour exams, which was something new.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
I would say, pack your bags and get on that flight to Stockholm! Don't hesitate to ask me any question, however silly they may sound, and I will help you in every way I can.
Get ready to shape your future, get ready for KTH!
