Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course is intended mainly for professional engineers and others who quickly and efficiently need to improve in a foreign language or learn the basics of a new one. The course focuses on giving the participants concrete and useful strategies to quickly and efficiently improve in a language already familiar to them, or learn a new one. Against a background of key concepts and current research in language learning and related fields, such as language typology and multilingualism, the participants are given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with different tools for learning a foreign language. The course deals with the importance of language proficiency in multilingual workplaces and in a global society. The course lets the participants reflect on advantages and disadvantages of different learning styles and learning strategies.

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  • give an account of how key concepts and theories in language acquisition, as well as other relevant research, can be used to support the student's own language learning process
  • reflect on the importance of knowing foreign languages, both in multilingual workplaces and in a global society
  • present their personal insights about advantages and disadvantages of different learning styles and strategies for language learning
  • identify and use various tools for efficient and independent language learning

in order to

  • develop their own strategies for efficient and independent language learning with a focus on professional needs.
