Carlos
Carlos is in his second year of the master's programme in Sustainable Urban Planning and Design. In the spring semester of 2024, he was an exchange student at the Shibaura Institute of Technology, Japan.
What are the best tips you would give to other students thinking about studying abroad?
- Look for accommodation in good time - Start planning and finding alternatives for accommodation. Relying on just one option can be problematic if it doesn't go through. It is tough to find housing in a big city like Tokyo if the school does not offer student apartments on your campus or if there is a lack of organisations that offer accommodation for students.
- See setbacks as opportunities - Being part of setbacks, small or big, is tough but also the most normal thing during an exchange. Take advantage of these and be motivated to meet them.
- Explore the culture and travel – Take the opportunity to travel around the country and experience as much as possible outside of studies. Before departure, list places you want to visit to plan what you want to discover. Dare to travel alone sometimes, as it gives you time to reflect on your experiences during the exchange. Asia, and especially Japan and Tokyo, has a lot to offer!
