Pharos University of Alexandria is a relatively young private university founded in 2006 in the ancient city of Alexandria, Egypt's second-largest city. Since 2010, KTH and PUA have collaborated extensively, and KTH assists PUA to develop its undergraduate programs with the aim of achieving highest level of engineering education and research at PUA.

KTH is a driving force in many capacity-building projects around the world with universities and industry, sharing practices and obtaining new perspectives. KTH is supporting PUA in the development of their quality processes. This can contribute to KTH’s international reputation, mainly in Egypt and Africa, having opportunity to make significant contributions to society in Alexandra and Egypt. The partnership covers staff exchanges, student exchanges, research collaboration, and are planning to work forward and design new master's programs and have a transfer Master’s programmes.

KTH-PUA bachelor programmes

PUA offers six Bachelor of Science programmes in Engineering, which are validated by KTH and delivered at PUA. When graduating, students from the PUA-KTH programmes will receive two certificates: one from PUA accredited by the Egyptian Supreme Council of University and one from KTH recognising the awarded PUA Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering. All programmes encompass five years of studies and are the following:

  • Architecture Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering (Production Engineering)
  • Petrochemical Engineering Program (Polymer Materials)
  • Structural Engineering and Bridges

Exchange studies and projects for students

Every year, KTH welcomes exchange students from PUA who take courses here and stay in Sweden for one semester. KTH students are welcome to do projects at PUA on both bachelor's and master's level, or other collaboration projects. For several years, KTH students have also participated in workshops at PUA, with the possibility to collaborate with Egyptian students.

Research collaboration

Every year, a handful of researchers from PUA visit KTH from the subject areas in which we collaborate. Every second year, we organise the international conference ICNTSE (International Conference on New Trends for Sustainable Energy). In addition, KTH has arranged several workshops for the faculty staff at PUA. Some of the workshops were open for attendees from the Egyptian industry and people from Alexandria's municipality.

Representatives from KTH for each programme annually attend two meetings with PUA faculty members. Once at the beginning of March for quality assurance and follow-up, giving lectures and seminars in place at PUA and online. The second meeting is at the end of June for the examination board meeting, attending the students' presentations, etc. Additional visits can be planned, for example, to perform an arranged workshop. The KTH-PUA project leader visits PUA for a third time at the end of September to attend the graduation ceremony.
