Collaboration models between academia and school

K-ULF project is run in collaboration between KTH and five city authorities (huvudmän), the city of Stockholm, Haninge municipality, the city of Lidingö, Nynäshamn Municipality, Värmdö municipality and NTI gymnasiet (highschool).

The K-ULF project is part of a national pilot project called ULF . The pilot project, on behalf of the government, will develop and test sustainable collaboration models between academia and school in terms of research, school activities and teacher education.

Aim

The aim of the project will be to develop and test sustainable collaboration models between academia and school in terms of research, school activities and teacher education, by more clearly integrating research with education and internships and by linking students’ independent work (degree projects) with practical research and school development based on a scientific foundation.Together with the KTH Department of Learning, a model is being developed in which principals of different sizes and demographic conditions but with similar challenges work together on practical research projects.

Goal

The goal is to develop, test and evaluate a collaboration model linked to the teacher students' degree projects and work-based education (VFU - School placement) in the teacher education within the Master of Science in Engineering and Teacher Program at KTH.

The House of Science that works closely with universities and researchers, schools, teachers and student teachers, have a laboratory environment where a large number of school students and teacher students carry out various activities for the project.

They have together with the municipalities identified three key areas that contribute to the work with the school's compensatory mission:

  1. Digitalisation,
  2. Boys 'and girls' knowledge results
  3. Language development methods through laboratory work and practical work in mathematics, technology and science.

Examples of new knowledge in these areas concern how laboratory work can support all students 'language development and how different digital tools can be used in schools to best support all students' learning with a special focus on boys and students with different language backgrounds. 

The roles

  • KTH contributes to the collaboration with students, researchers in didactics and teachers who are responsible for VFU and supervise degree projects.
  • The municipalities contribute to the collaboration with teachers and school activities as well as supervision of VFU students and collaboration on degree projects.
  • The municipalities are the initiators of developing relevant issues and their school activities form the basis for the studies' data collection
  • KTH is the initiator of the design and coordination of the scientific study such as its choice of didactic models and implementation.
  • The House of Science operates as a platform and together with the Department of Learning at KTH, is responsible for the overall coordination.
