Digital models of machine tool for in-process tolerance assessment
The project aims to identify the requirements for design and implementation of machine tool digital models for in-process part tolerancing, and investigate what support the digital machine tool models can offer for proving conformity with product specifications.
Background
Performance and behavior of machine tools, cutting tools and fixtures directly contribute to variations in dimensions and geometry of machined features, making them an essential input for designing and analyzing tolerance chains in processes planning. Utilization of digital models of the machine can enable the a-priori evaluation of the digital “in-process” tolerance chains and thus enable higher value creation. In addition, digital machine models are a great potential for improving sustainability.
Aims and objectives
The objectives of this project are two. First, identify the requirements for the design and implementation of machine tool digital models for in-process part tolerancing. The requirements will define the level of needed detail and features for the model implementation. Second, investigate the support the digital machine tool models can offer in the assessment of total uncertainty in proving conformity with the product specifications.
Project plan
Applied interdisciplinarity
In this project interdisciplinary means the cooperation of researchers of different backgrounds that bring in their own philosophy to bridge the knowledge gaps between the domains. In addition it means collaboration with industrial practitioners for the assessment of models and in process tolerance chains.
