Conference

The Conference on Architectural Competitions is a conference within the conference called Constructions Matter: Managing Complexities, Decisions and Actions in the Building Process. The general conference is organized by the Center for Management Studies of the Building Process, Copenhagen Business School. The Architectural Competitions Conference is organized by the University of Fribourg, in co-operation with the conveners of the general conference in Copenhagen. The Architectural Competitions Conference will have its own themes, special keynote lecture or lectures, workshops for paper presentations, a plenary session and a get-together devoted to the establishment of a research network.

The Architectural Competition Conference addresses a broad audience of all those with an interest in competitions both as a field of research and as a professional practice. Senior researchers and Ph.D students in architecture, urban design, history, geography and management as well as students, teachers, practitioners of architecture, planning, competition management, representatives of national and international associations of architects and of entities responsible for the oversight of public competitions are welcome to participate in the conference.

Themes

Architectural competitions have recently emerged as a significant field of empirical research. For this conference, we invite papers on the following themes:

• Two-stage (especially prequalification) versus one-stage competitions: relating procedures and outcomes
• “The perfect brief”: How much and what kind of scope does it provide? How does it achieve that?
• Concepts and theoretical approaches in interdisciplinary 'competitions research'
• Tracing the political in planning competitions
• Expertise and judgment: Performing quality in design competitions
• Historical trajectories: places, cultures and ruptures in legislation (e.g. impacts of WTO regulations/EU regulation from 1994)
• Knowledge creation and design competitions: from individual answers, experiences and specific solutions to general, collective and theoretical reflections.

Organization

The conference will consist of a series of paper presentation workshops as well as the plenary session and a networking session devoted to the establishment of a scholarly research and planning for future conferences.

Abstracts submitted will be peer reviewed by an interdisciplinary committee made up of architects, historians, and geographers. Each of the papers accepted will be assigned a co-referent (respondent). The conference presentation will consist of a concise summary of the submitted paper which will have previously been made available to conference participants via downloading, a comment by the co-referent (respondent) and of questions from the audience. A total of 30-40 minutes will be devoted to each paper, response and discussion (depending on the number of presentations).

A publication to include a selection of the presented papers in the form of either a special issue of a journal or of a book is being organized. Selection will be made on the basis of peer review by a scientific committee.

Submission Requirements

An abstract of 10’000 characters by the date listed below
Papers submitted for workshops should be about 30,000 characters in length.

Networking

In the schedule there will be time for informal meetings and a formal networking session. The conference will help build a research network that will extend across Europe and the Americas and beyond. It will encourage scientific research on competitions, including joint comparative studies.
