LandEX: Improving Landscape resilience by integrating measures to adapt and mitigate hydrological EXtremes

LandEX is an ambitious project aimed at improving the resilience of landscapes to hydroclimatic extremes such as floods and droughts. The project stands at the forefront of integrating innovative adaptation measures across European landscapes. This project, by employing nature-based solutions (NBS) and advanced hydrological modelling, seeks to create synergies that mitigate the impacts of these extremes effectively.

Objectives and Vision

LandEX is driven by the goal of spatially optimizing a suite of adaptation measures to enhance landscape resilience. By leveraging connectivity-based hydrological models and co-developing adaptation scenarios with local stakeholders, the project envisions a future where landscapes are not only resilient to climate-induced hydrological extremes but are also sustainable habitats for biodiversity and human livelihoods.

Consortium and Collaborative Expertise

The consortium brings together an interdisciplinary team from NIBIO (Norway), KTH (Sweden), Wageningen University (The Netherlands), CEBAS-CSIC (Spain), and FCiências.ID (Portugal). This collaboration harnesses diverse expertise in floods and droughts mitigation, NBS, hydrological modeling, and stakeholder participation, ensuring a comprehensive approach to landscape resilience. The PI from KTH is Zahra Kalantari, and for the entire project, it's Jantiene Baartman from Wageningen University & Research.

LandEX employs a multifaceted methodology that includes stakeholder engagement, field-based assessments, and cutting-edge hydrological modeling to co-design spatial adaptation scenarios. This innovative approach emphasizes the importance of integrating structural and non-structural measures, engaging local stakeholders in the process, and applying spatially explicit models to assess the effectiveness of adaptation measures across different scales.

Impact and Significance

The project aims to provide actionable insights and tools for water managers and landowners to design effective spatial adaptation strategies. By fostering co-learning and exchange of experiences across European regions, LandEX contributes to the broader objectives of mitigating the impact of floods and droughts on society, aligning with the Water4All call and supporting the EU's Green Deal and biodiversity strategies.
