Student Festival on Art, Technology and Design 2025
FESTIVAL THEME FOR 2025 IS THE SPACE

CALL FOR IDEAS

For the second time, NAVET (see below for more info about kth.se/navet ), in collaboration with Tekniska - The National Museum of Science and Technology , organizes a call for ideas within the crossing-areas between art, technology and design.

We welcome ideas from undergraduate (bachelor) and postgraduate (master) students from KTH, KMH, SKH, KKH and Konstfack to create multidisciplinary teams for submitting project ideas. The theme for the 2025 festival is SPACE. Submissions from single participants are also welcome; NAVET will try to team you up with students with complementary skills from other partners (more information can be found at the submission link below). Any format is accepted; for example, it could be a performance or an interactive installation, based on any technology (analogue, digital, hybrid) and expression form.

We will welcome proposals that will include a remote dialogue between a location at one of NAVET’s academic partners and Tekniska.

Successful proposals will receive 15 000 sek for implementing a prototype, installation, and/or performance.

The deadline for submitting your ideas is May 14 2025.

Selected ideas will be communicated during week 23, and invited to be briefly presented at Tekniska.

At the end of this page, you will find the form for submitting your project proposal, but before doing that, we recommend you read the text below.

The National Museum of Science och Technology will arrange meetings during the period between the open call and the deadline, and will assist the project throughout this time.

They will also open up Space Nights seminars to everyone, offering the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of science and space, as well as inspiration before deadline.

  1. Space Nights: Black Holes
    • Date: March 19th
    • Time: 18:00
    • Theme: Exploring the mysteries of black holes, potentially including their formation, properties, and how they affect the fabric of spacetime.
  2. Space Nights: Void
    • Date: April 23rd
    • Time: 18:00
    • Theme: Likely focused on the concept of "empty" space, the vacuum of space, and perhaps the challenges it poses to understanding the universe.
  3. Space Nights: Dark Matter
    • Date: May 7th
    • Time: 18:00-19.30
    • Theme: A discussion on the elusive nature of dark matter, its role in the cosmos, and current research on this mysterious substance.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SPACE’S THEME

The vastness of space is essential for the existence of life on Earth and the sustainability of our civilization. Just as biodiversity in forests is crucial for ecosystem health, the ecological balance of our planet relies on maintaining the integrity of the cosmos. Human life on Earth is intertwined with this cosmic environment; the elements that compose our bodies, such as carbon and oxygen, were forged in the hearts of stars.

Exploration of space has profound implications for human well-being and innovation. For centuries, celestial observations revealed our planet’s place in the universe, leading to advancements in technology and a broader understanding of our existence. In an increasingly urbanized world, the night sky offers a sanctuary for reflection and contemplation, inspiring us to ponder our existence in the grand cosmos.

The cosmos also presents numerous benefits. Our reliance on fossil fuels has led to alarming challenges related to climate change, prompting the need for innovative solutions. Research into renewable energy sources, such as solar power harvested from space or the potential for asteroid mining, represents critical steps toward alleviating our dependence on Earth-bound resources.

The exploration of space has faced its challenges; as we entered the space age, the economic demands for resources became apparent. In the 20th century, the launch of satellites and the establishment of international space stations expanded our reach but also raised concerns about space debris and the sustainability of our ventures beyond Earth. Today, rigorous regulations and collaborative efforts among nations help manage the use of outer space to ensure that it remains a viable environment for research and exploration.

Space agencies and private companies alike are harnessing new technologies to monitor and understand the health of celestial bodies and our planet. Technologies developed for space exploration are now being applied to address terrestrial issues, from climate monitoring to improving global communication. Innovations in sustainable resource management can help us transition from fossil-based materials to more sustainable options, utilizing the resources found in space.

As we continue to explore and utilize the boundless opportunities that space offers, we must ask ourselves: Is space enough? How can we ensure that our cosmic endeavors not only enhance our lives but also safeguard the health of our planet and the universe we inhabit?

Keywords for inspiration: biodiversity, ecosystem, cosmos, night sky, exploration, space station, celestial bodies, dark matter, black holes, void.

What is NAVET?

NAVET is a KTH centre with the overarching goal of becoming a meeting place for research and projects in the intersection of art, technology and design, with the purpose of facilitating and creating opportunities for exchange and research collaboration among artists, designers, engineers, humanists, natural and social scientists. NAVET is a collaboration between KTH Royal Institute of Technology, KKH Royal Institute of Art, KMH Royal College of Music, SKH Stockholm University of the Arts, Konstfack, Tekniska - The National Museum of Science and Technology and Scenkonstmuseet - The Swedish Museum of Performing Arts.
