Structure of the education

Each academic year consists of two semesters, each lasting 20 weeks. Each semester is divided into two study periods. The education comprises two years of full-time studies (120 credits), including a thesis project (30 credits). The education begins with several mandatory courses in the first semester to ensure a sufficient level of knowledge in the main field of study and to provide the common base needed to take elective courses. In the second and third semesters, there is room for 30 credits of elective courses (4 courses of 7.5 credits each). In the fourth semester, the thesis project is conducted.

Courses

The programme is course-based. Lists of courses are included in Appendix 1: Course list

Grading system

Courses in the first and the second cycle are graded on a scale from A to F. A-E are passing grades, A is the highest grade. The grades pass (P) and fail (F) are used for courses under certain circumstances.

The grading scale is specified in the respective course syllabus.

Conditions for participation in the programme

Participation requires admission to courses within the programme and registration for the course. Continued studies require specific eligibility for each course, as specified in the respective course syllabus.

Studies abroad

The program is offered by three universities, and the program structure is not suitable for exchange studies during semesters 1-3. It is designed for program cohesion during all three first semesters. Exchange agreements presuppose reciprocity between the two universities that enter into the agreement within a certain subject area. As students study courses at two or three universities during the semester, it is not possible to conduct full-time exchange studies during the first three semesters. However, there are good opportunities for internationalization at home. The opportunity to study abroad is available during semester 4, when the degree project is carried out. The degree project can also take place at research institutes or companies abroad. Financial support for studies abroad can be obtained from scholarships such as Erasmus traineeships abroad for students. The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet is responsible for the degree project in medicine which is taken by 250 students per year. The department has extensive experience in coordinating international projects. Students often identify innovative ways to finance their studies, such as small foundations that promote research between specific countries.

Degree project

The thesis work course constitutes the concluding part of the education. The thesis project can be initiated when the course's specific eligibility requirements are met.

Degree

The degree is called "Degree of Master of Science (120 credits)" in English, and the main field of the degree is specified in the text section of the degree certificate.
