MG2122 Advanced CAD 6.0 credits

Will replace the course MG2022 Advanced CAD and Rapid Prototyping from autumn semester 2022

NB! The course will be given in English - in spite of what has been specified at e.g. universityadmissions.se

The overall goal of this course is to make you familiar with most of the functions for part modelling in one state-of-the-art CAD system for mechanical design. As a result, you will become an advanced user of the system that we are using, Solid Edge from Siemens Digital Industries Software, but that is an effect, rather than a goal. The skills you acquire during this course could be applied in any modern CAD system from the major vendors, as the functionality and modelling methodology is, if not identical, at least very similar between all these systems[1].

[1] The dominant systems for mechanical CAD are: CATIA and Solid Works from Dassault Systèmes; NX and Solid Edge from Siemens Digital Industries Software; Creo from PTC; Inventor from Autodesk Inc.

Content and learning outcomes

Course disposition

Classes 1-2 times per week with activities such as:

  • Laboratory exercises in usage of advanced CAD system functions
  • Individual work on several parts with complex shapes and structures, based on 2D engineering drawings 

The student has to document his/her individual work in a technical report describing modelling approaches and commands used, lessons learnt from each model and reflections over modelling issues and the learning process

Extensive (home)work required, besides scheduled classes

Course contents

The course covers the following items:

  • Advanced solid modelling operations
  • Modelling of details with freeform surfaces
  • Modelling of sheet metal products
  • Modelling of complex assemblies
  • Varied and unconventional working methods in CAD

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  • create CAD models of good quality of a structured way by utilising the full functionality of a modern CAD system. This includes:

            o   components with complex shapes
            o   sheet metal products
            o   complex assemblies

  • interpret complex 2D drawings and use them as a basis to create 3D models in CAD
  • analyse and discuss the development of one´s own CAD expertise during the course

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Knowledge equivalent to the intended learning outcomes for the course MG1028 ”Introductory 3D CAD”, or the equivalent course component "Introductory 3D CAD" in one of the courses MF1001 ”Mechanical Engineering, introductory course”, MF1061 ”Introduction to Design and Product Realisation”, or MG2128 ”CAD and Other IT tools in Industrial Processes, Extended Course”.

Recommended prerequisites

Basic proficiency in using 3D CAD, corresponding to the intended learning outcomes for the course MG1028/and for the Introductory CAD module of the courses MF1061/MF1001/MG2128, i.e. you should be able to:

  • create a CAD model in Solid Edge or any similar CAD system as:
    - a parameterized part model
    - an assembly of part models
    - an animated mechanism model
    - a fully dimensioned detail drawing of a part
    - an assembly drawing with an exploded view and a parts list
