The course deals with urban developments and features in a contemporary and a historical perspective as well as a forward-looking perspective. Transport Technology development, location and urban development and traffic impacts are also taken up. The course also discusses common building materials in buildings from different periods as well as material characteristics, material resistance and impact on human and environment.
Some construction techniques for buildings will be highlighted in the course. Installation technology is also taken up as wel as the connection to larger technical systems. The course also focuses on the planning process, human needs and functional requirements that should be the basis for urban planning and how the natural conditions such as soil, water and ecosystems form the basis for such planning.
The course includes field trips, a project and an assignment with educational applications.
After the course the student is expected to:
Account for human needs and functional requirements that should be the basis for urban planning and describe the process stages from planning to management.
Describe how natural conditions such as soil, water and ecosystems underpin urban planning.
Describe and analyse urban developments and features in a historical perspective, with particular emphasis on the relationship between traffic and built-up areas.
Describe some connection between transportation technology development, location and urban development as well as identify environmental effects.
Identify common building materials in buildings from different periods of time and be aware of the materials' most important characteristics, material resistance and the impact on human beings and the environment.
Describe the specific construction of houses with frames of wood, brick, concrete and steel and account for some installations (primarily heating, ventilation, sanitation and electricity) and relate it to the major technical supply systems of water, sewage, waste and energy.
To present a concrete proposal for an urban area, from goal-setting to the detailed description of buildings, traffic, nature, features and character.
Describe and reflect on how the technology content of the above can serve as subject matter in the school's technology subject for grades 7-9 and give suggestions on how it can be taught and assessed.
