Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

This course aims for its participants to reflect on and make decisions about communicating their technical-specific knowledge and skills in both academic and professional contexts. There is a focus on clear, concise, and precise English. It includes reflection, discussion, reading and listening comprehension exercises, and writing and video assignments that reflect both academic and professional contexts. Course participants can expect training in and personal feedback on:

- advanced scientific English

- language and discourse analysis

- effective peer review

Intended learning outcomes

In a language-focused learning environment and with course participants from different technical disciplines, the students learn both the mechanics of English and strategies to communicate their technical knowledge in clear, concise, and precise English.

After passing the course, the students should be able to:

  1. identify the principles and conventions of discourse in their technical discipline, and apply them in different academic and professional contexts
  2. adapt communication about their technical discipline to different academic and professional audiences
  3. compare, evaluate, and reflect on how technical knowledge be communicated in academic and professional contexts
  4. take stock of their technology-specific knowledge, ideas, and skills, and account for how they can be transferred to professional contexts

Specific prerequisites

Documented knowledge in a STEM discipline, with a minimum of 90 ECTS, and English proficiency equivalent to B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
