The course gives the students the opportunity to develop their multilingual skills through using and being exposed to several languages (English, French, German and Swedish). We use a variation of material (articles, videos, guest talks) in different languages, and discuss and give presentations in the different languages. Our themes revolve around topics relevant to engineering professions.
The students choose to communicate in at least two language combinations: French and/or German and English and/or Swedish. In this way, the students are given the opportunity to deepen and develop their previous knowledge in one or more languages, thus gaining insights in, and understanding of, a new language/several new languages.
The students practice the ability to communicate effectively in several languages in a professional context: giving, and understanding, presentations, arguing, or explaining the contents of a document or a video. In order to bridge language barriers and facilitate effective communication, we practice strategies and skills such as language alternation, code switching, transfer, and mediation.
In the course, we also reflect on intercultural communication and the ability to apply different perspectives on a issue. This cultural awareness makes it possible for students to handle intercultural situations with respect, and adapt their communication style accordingly.
In the course, students practice linguistic flexibility, which is of great value for international mobility and work in global teams.
The course is conducted online, with written assignments, workshops and seminars.
