LH231V Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 7.5 credits

The aim of this course is to give you the opportunity to develop your professional role as a teacher in higher education, which includes a scholarly and collegial approach to teaching and learning.

During the course, you will belong to a learning team. You are supposed to have meetings and also work on a team assignment between the course meetings. In order to pass the course, you must follow and participate in teamwork during one course offering/semester.

7.5 hp corresponds to a total workload of approximately 200 hours.

The course is tailored for teachers at KTH. It is included in course offerings that meet KTH's requirement of 15 credits in academic teaching for employment or promotion to a teaching position.

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The purpose of the course is to strengthen the role of a teacher in higher education in Sweden with an emphasis on increased understanding of how students learn and what can influence student learning.

Main themes for the course are:

- Student learning in higher education

- Types of instruction and the role of the teacher

- Planning of teaching and learning activities

The course also includes items around digitisation and diversity and inclusion in higher education.

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the course, the participant should be able to:

- reflect on students' learning in higher education and, in collaboration with others, be able to discuss how they can create an open and inclusive environment that promotes learning

- apply concepts and research results in discussions of teaching and learning in higher education in relation to one's own practice

- discuss and apply rules and directives valid in higher education in Sweden and in a local context

- design objective-based teaching and learning activities, and justify choices based on research on teaching and learning, given local conditions

- reflect on one's own development as a teacher in higher education

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

  • INL1 - Assignment, 4.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • PRO1 - Project Assignment, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Parts of the examination are carried out as degree project in groups (PRO1).

Other requirements for final grade

The course requires active participation in the timetabled course meetings, of which compulsory attendance is required at the following course meetings:

- Compulsory attendance at the first course meeting

- Compulsory attendance at the oral assessing seminars (part of the project task)

- Compulsory attendance at the oral assessing seminar (part of the individual assignment)

 In consultation with course coordinator, the course participant can be given the opportunity to compensate for at most two missed meetings through complementary assignments.
