FLF3017 Evaluation and Learning 7.5 credits

It is relevant for many PhD candidates to have a wide understanding of evaluation, in relation to their own research. It is also a common task for researchers to commission, produce or interpret different kinds of evaluations. The course directly addresses the learning outcome for doctoral studies: "demonstrate the capacity [...] to review and assess new and complex phenomena, issues and situations autonomously and critically"

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course is interdisciplinary and includes evaluation theory - methodology and - practice with a focus on policy and program evaluation.

The main contents are:

  • the role of evaluations in society and in organisations, especially in research and education
  • evaluation trends and historical development
  • evaluation design, implementation and reporting including evaluation methods
  • ethics and values connected to evaluation

Intended learning outcomes

The general aim of the course is to offer specialised knowledge of evaluations mainly connected to education, research and other public sector.

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  • discuss and compare different theoretical perspectives on evaluation
  • analyse a given design and implementation of evaluations
  • problematise evaluation practice in policy and administration with special focus on education and knowledge-intensive organisations
  • discuss ethical problems at evaluation

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Admitted to third-cycle education primarily in the subjects technology and learning, historical studies of technology or science and environment and secondarily closely related subjects.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Other requirements for final grade

To pass the course, actively prepared participation in the seminars is also required.
