Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

In the course it is analysed how qualitative and quantitative research methods are applied in the research domain learning and IT. The course focuses particularly on research methods that are common when studying learning and IT, including digital methods, design methods and innovative and experimenting methods. During the course, different types are discussed by research methods and its possibilities and limitations for studies of learning and IT. A special focus is to write and discuss drafts of the method chapter of the thesis.

Intended learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to give the doctoral student a specialised method knowledge with special focus on the research methods that are used in current research about learning and IT.

After passing the course, the student should:

  • be able to give an account of and critically analyse how common research methods could be applied in research about learning and IT.
  • be able to give an account of and critically analyse research methods that are used in current research about learning and IT.
  • be able to critically review current research about learning and IT with special focus on which conclusions that can be drawn depending on chosen research design.
  • Be able to reflect on own method choices and its possibilities and limitations in relation to the own research.

General entry requirements to participate have the one that is admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at Swedish university or the equivalent education abroad.

Selection
Priority is given to doctoral students connected to the national graduate school for digital technologies in education. In case of a vacancy, other doctoral students can participate.
