The overall goal of the course is to develop pedagogical theoretical knowledge and practical skills for supervision. The course comprises a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part of the course consists of lectures and problem-based learning activities that provide knowledge and understanding of supervision methods. Examples of authentic supervision situations are presented and the roles and responsibilities of the involved parties (supervisor and student) are analyzed and discussed. The practical part of the course aims to apply the supervision strategies covered during the course. The course participant is given the task of formulating a theoretical bachelor's degree project in the field of biotechnology, and also to practically supervise a group of graduate students during the implementation of the project.

Intended learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the course participant is expected to be able to
- practically apply adequate pedagogical methods as supervisor by taking into account the student's commitment, background and learning strategies
- supervise students individually and in groups using methodology that promotes effective and in-depth learning strategies, as well as to plan and design learning activities for supervision of sustainable projects
- actively reflect on one's own role as supervisor, and maintain a professional working relationship with students based on good communication (meta communication) and constructive feedback

Recommended prerequisites
Education in the field of biotechnology or related subject areas. The course participant is expected to supervise students who perform a bachelor's degree project in the field of biotechnology or equivalent

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

For the final grade, an approved written home exam is required as well as completed practical supervision of students.
