FAK3156 Emotions, Environment and Climate: Affects and the environmental humanities 7.5 credits

The course aims to explore issues concerning sustainability through analysing the societal, political and affective dimensions of the climate crisis by combining two lively research strands within the humanities and social sciences, namely environmental humanities and the affective turn.

The goal is to give the students an orientation in present day academic discourse on the relations between environment, society, culture and nature. A central aim is how questions on the structuring, managing and storying of the climat issue comes about through collective, social and cultural registers of emotion.

The course is organized with a focus on seminars, literature and individual research.

After the course, the student should be able to

- Orally and in writing reason around central terms within the history of affect and environmental humanities and the connections between them 

- Analyze how emotions are allowed, removed, articulated and regulated in historical processes connecting to climate and environment.

- Reflect on historical changes and contemporary applications of emotions in the debate on envionment and climate

- Reflect on historical changes and contemporary application of emotions in the debate on environment and climate

Accepted to a PhD programme in history or other subject in the humanities and social sciences.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

• SEM1 - Seminars, 2.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
• UPP1 - Text reflections, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
• UPP2 - Final written assignment, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

To attend and actively participate in all seminars is compulsory. If there are specific reasons, the course responsible teacher can assign a compensation task in the case of absence. Normally no more than two seminars can be compensated.

• In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
• In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.

An application to the course should be sent to course responsible teacher and contain a short letter reflecting on why the student wants to attend the course.
