Content and learning outcomes

Course disposition

The project work is conducted in small groups, and is carried out in cooperation with relevant public and private bodies. The focus of the course will be on making synthesis and methods for practical urban planning projects. Furthermore, the groups are to analyse how their project proposals relate to different social groups, key stakeholders, environmental impact and politics. The project is conducted by the students fairly independently where lectures and seminars will serve as inspiration and guidance.

Besides the group work, the course consists of two individual assignments in connection to the project. In the first individual assignment students have to reflect on the consequences of the proposed development from a local and regional perspective. In the individual seminar assignment the proposed development is related to corresponding developments within and outside Sweden.

Course contents

In this course the collected knowledge in urban and regional is applied in a practical setting. The project encompasses the whole planning process for a specific urban area for which contemporary planning issues are addressed and analysed using the range of knowledge, tools and skills acquired during the previous stages of the students' studies. In the project, proposals for action both in terms of the physical environment and the planning process will be developed. A large emphasis is put on the ability to communicate intermediate and final results. Students will have the possibility to pursue a particular line of interest of their choice within the larger topic of the project, thus giving room for specialization.

Intended learning outcomes

The overall aim of the course is to develop the students’ abilities to handle complex planning situations where diverse and sometimes conflicting interests are to be treated: social integration, economic growth, ecological concern, cultural values etc. The intention is to foster a critical and creative approach for coming practical and theoretical work in the field of urban planning.

After fulfilling the course requirements, students should be able to:

  • carry out a comprehensive analysis of a project area using different qualitative and quantitative tools in order to identify problems, conflicts and needs in the project area.
  • develop a plan for the development of the project area considering the long-term interests on local and regional level.
  • draw up an implementation plan for the proposed development in which the key actors, who have the capacity to contribute to the implementation of the proposed development, are identified and a funding strategy is set up.
  • critically reflect on the implications of the proposed development for differents focus groups in the project area and identify obstacles and impediments that could undermine the proposed development
  • prepare an oral and witten presentation using visuals, texts and tools that effectively communicate the core features of the proposed development and implementation plan
