The degree project should be based on an assignment that is academically independent and may not be carried out at the direct behest of an external party e g companies or the public sector.

The course structure of the degree project includes:

  • Regular supervision by an appointed  supervisor
  • Mid seminar
  • Final seminar
  • Project submission

After receiving the grade pass on the project submission, the project needs to be presented at Diploma Days in order to receive the credits of the course.

The degree project is to carried out mainly individually. In certain cases, the degree project can be carried out in collaboration with another student. A precondition is that each student's effort corresponds to the requirements and learning outcomes for the individual degree project. An application  for cooperation must be submitted as part of the registration to the course before the term starts.

Course contents

The degree project in architecture is based on a Thesis booklet, an assignment that should deal with architectural issues and be able to be discussed in architectural terms.

The degree project gives the student the possibility to deepen and develop her/his architectural knowledge within a specific field, and the possibility to develop design research within the subject of architecture.

The degree project opens up possibilities for processing design problems, developing method, creating techniques and examining the dialogue between the student's own project and a broader architectural context.

To present the thesis project within the given time frame is part of the assignment (one semester).

Intended learning outcomes

After completed degree project, the student should be able to

  • demonstrate that she/he has the acquired the ability to develop the subject area in the architecture field, demonstrate how the degree project relates to a contemporary architectural context and contemporary architectural concerns and thereby show on academic and professional skills as an architect.
  • show knowledge of the scientific and artistic ground of the field and understanding in relevant research and development work.
  • reflect on and formulate clear architectural design problem as well as reflect upon and develop methodologies and design techniques and identify the need for additional knowledge.
  • handle complex relationships, develop and demonstrate an advanced understanding of programs/function, context, technology and society's aims for economic, social and ecological sustainable development
  • reflect upon and evaluate the implications of the degree project and reflect upon and evaluate the knowledge that the student has acquired during the work process
  • communicate and present the project to a jury and clearly demonstrate the acquired knowledge within the given time frame.

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

All compulsory courses in accordance with the programme syllabus within the Degree program in Architecture or the Master´s programme in Architecture must be passed.

270 credits for the 300 credits Degree of Master of Architecture

90 credits for the 120 credits Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) within the main field of Architecture

Approved Thesis Booklet is required before the degree project can be started.

After discussion with the student, the supervisor establishes appropriate course literature for each individual project.

Examination and completion

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Examination (EXA 1) is performed after project submissionby the examiner in consultation with course responsible and supervisor.

If the project submissionis not considered to meet the requirements for Pass (P) the student gets the degree Fail (F).

The number of examination sessions is limited to five.

Other requirements for final grade

The degree project must be presented at the KTH School of Architecture Diploma Days.
