Hydrogen, Power Grid Technologies and Transportation
This project studies hydrogen, focusing on operational benefits and sector connections such as support for electricity grids, fuel for transportation such as heavy trucks, and contribution to district heating.
The project is funded by Vinnova. With partners Ovako, Volvo Trucks, and Hitachi Energy, this project takes a system perspective on the hydrogen facility at Ovako Hofors, inaugurated in September 2023.
A first pre-study, The first industrial deployment of hydrogen for industrial heat with increased flexibility for the electricity grid and a sector coupling to transport, was performed in 2024. The first publication from the project is available here:

The paper is available here: IEEE Explorer
A second pre-study started in November 2024 entitled: Sector-coupling Green Hydrogen for Steel Production – Power grid support and sustainable mobility. This project studies hydrogen, focusing on operational benefits and sector connections such as support for electricity grids, fuel for transportation such as heavy trucks, and contribution to district heating. The project continues the feasibility study "Hydrogen for industrial heat with flexibility for electricity grid and a sector coupling to transport". It aims to bridge the missing parts identified before establishing a system demonstrator. In particular, the project will focus on studies of refueling stations with hydrogen gas for heavy transportation.
