Arts and Crafts of Technology
Thematic Description
This working group aims to bring together and highlight crafts-related practices with and around technology, within the NAVET network. The thematic scope spans from popular culture and folk art, to how crafted interactivity takes form in public exhibitions and on the contemporary art scene. Specific focus is on aesthetic craftsmanship with cutting edge technology.
One type of studies conducted under this theme concerns explorative work that combines traditional studio crafts and new technology. Examples include leather, silver, wood, glass, and textile, combined with or as part of interactive systems. In this strand of work we have collaborated with experienced craftspeople in these domains to further explore future design challenges, and openings, for instance using bio plastics and soft robotics. A second theme explores interactivity and cutting edge technology in contemporary art. This represents in depth studies of contemporary artworks produced within and outside of academic research. A third theme concerns increased attention to material practices involved in technological design, in the crafting of artful experiences.
