Content and learning outcomes
Course contents
Analyses of examples of written and oral technical communication Short written assignments that reflect different parts of technical communication (e.g. operating instructions, malfunction reports, executive summaries) Presentation and discussion techniques with a focus on communication situations in technical contexts (e.g. conferences, meetings) Discussions of authentic material to increase the understanding of current issues within technology and natural sciences (e.g. research ethics, sustainable development, technological breakthroughs).
Intended learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to give the student necessary skills for communication situations in technical contexts, for example for informing, reporting and presenting, writing an instruction manual or assisting with technical customer support. The course also provides general skills in text structure, scientific English in speech and writing, and English language.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- identify the differences in style between everyday language and technical communication and adapt his/her oral and written production to the target group
- write short texts of specialised technical or scientific nature
- give an individual presentation of a technical or scientific character with varied language use, take active part in discussions and be able to explain and defend his/her opinions about technical/scientific subjects

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
