Oral Music Theory
Music theoretical tools for performance expression within folk music.
The link between playing and dancing is central to the performance of many traditional musics including Swedish Folk Music. Participants experience and express subtle variations of complex metrical and rhythmical structures that affects interaction and expression within the styles.
This project aims to uncover performance practice strategies when playing for dancing by including measurements and visualizations of performance data, in combination with performer participation and interviews. By combining scientific, ethnomusicological and artistic research methods into the research of performance practice in Folk Music the objective is to develop Folk Music Theory concepts and tools that are relevant for understanding and developing performance starting from the experience of interplay and interaction of music and movement.
