Closed-loop strategy for valorization of biopolymers and bioplastics to value added packaging and biomedical materials

Project information

Biopolymers such as starch and bioplastics like polylactide (PLA) can be derived from agriculture and are among the most promising biobased products in packaging and biomedical applications. Considering the growing pressure of environmental safety and limited resources on our planet, it would be beneficial to retain the value of biobased waste products by valorization to functional additives and property enhances. This project aims at closed-loop strategy from feedstock recycling of biopolymers and bioplastics to utilization of the obtained degradation products as property enhancers in the same biopolymers or bioplastics to e.g. improve the mechanical properties or to introduce bioactivity. The project is financed by China Scholarship Council through KTH-CSC Programme.
