Project information
Polymeric materials contribute to the comfort and quality of life. However, due to their durability, plastic waste is an increasing problem. Environmentally degradable polymers are an alternative to present solid-waste management, especially when collection of plastic waste is difficult or economically not feasible. However, if the degradable materials are not properly designed and tested, they might cause new environmental problems. The aim of this project is to develop, in cooperation with National Metrology Laboratory in South Africa, improved testing and evaluation methods for materials designed for environmental degradation by utilising advanced analytical techniques such as TGA-MS, GC-MS and MALDI-MS.
