Today Jonatan works at Exxentric, a Swedish company focused on developing equipment for strength training and rehabilitation.
Jonatan Hussmo graduated from the master’s programme in Sports Technology in 2022. He now works in the Research and Development department at Exxenctric.
Hi, what are you doing at the moment?
I currently work at Exxentric, where I am a part of the RnD Tech department. Exxentric develops, manufactures, and sells flywheel training devices. Flywheel training is an unfamiliar concept to most people. It is a form of training where resistance is generated by flywheels instead of free weights. It has several physiological advantages and can be applied in a wide variety of environments like professional sports, rehabilitation, and health & fitness. Today, we provide our strength training devices worldwide to customers in 70+ countries, including professional teams in high-level sports leagues, performance institutes, and private customers who exercise at home!
What can a regular day look like at your job?
At RnD Tech, we develop and maintain electronics and software used on our devices. Mainly sensors that measure the flywheels rotation and a mobile application to visualize the sensor data. As the company is relatively young, my role here is dynamic, and each day offers something different. The primary responsibilities involve managing and planning electronic & software development projects, designing user interfaces, and managing app releases.
I spent most days designing, specifying, and testing prototype features for the application, with a lot of planning and occasional bug fixes. As the Tech department was recently starting in the company, I also focus a lot on improving our internal processes and my skills in software development in between.
Why did you choose the Sports Technology programme at KTH?
I have been interested in technology for as long as I can remember. Besides that, I've always been very active and have participated in multiple sports. Later in life, I became interested in human movement and physiology as well. That’s why when I saw that this programme had a mix between technological areas and physiological sciences, it sounded like a perfect fit for me.
Are there any insights you acquired during your studies that have been extra useful for you in your career?
In general, learning about biomechanics and physiology has helped me a lot. It has benefited me when I have had to develop sensor data processing tasks, and I want to translate that into some feedback. Not all types of users might understand such data in a raw format, and it's been essential to have that knowledge to bridge the gap between technology and health successfully.
What was the best aspects of your studies at KTH?
I liked that I could choose more project-based courses. There were a lot of projects to choose from. Some of them also let you connect with companies and being able to work on solving "real” problems is definitely one of the best aspects. The mix of technological and physiological disciplines was also a really good aspect of the programme.
What are your plans for the future?
I wouldn't say I’m the type of person with a clear plan of what I want to do in the future, but rather take opportunities as they come. I have some loose plans, but nothing "written in stone". Right now, I'm planning to learn more about mobile development (full-stack), get some experience within that, and eventually, learn about software architecture.
In the future, I would really like to start my own business. Designing and developing products/services within sports & health, or perhaps running my own gym/center for sports performance.
What would you want to say to a student thinking of applying for this programme?
In addition to a degree from a respected and prestigious university, you will obtain a diverse and rather unique set of skills within engineering. Graduating opens the door to either research or working in an industry that is expected to grow massively over the next few years. So, if you love sports and technology, don't hesitate to enroll in this programme.
