Different forms of exchanges for doctoral students

As a doctoral student, you have several opportunities to participate in exchange studies. Doctoral students are considered both students and staff members, which allows you to apply for scholarships that apply to both of these groups.

Below is a list of different forms of exchanges that you can complete as a doctoral student. The scholarship amounts vary depending on the type of activity to be carried out. Contact the Erasmus coordinator for more information.

Erasmus + student mobility

Studies

Student exchanges for studies between higher education institutions shall be carried out within the framework of an Erasmus exchange agreement (inter-institutional agreement). As a doctoral student, you can study courses at a partner university. The study period can last from two to 12 months. The study period should take place at one university during a continuous period. The studies must take place full-time, 30 ECTS credits per semester (fewer credits under short-term mobility) and must be credited by your department.

Dissertation preparation activity

As a doctoral student, you have the opportunity to use the exchange for data collection, writing, or the like as a dissertation preparation activity. The study period can be from two to 12 months.

The mobility does not have to give ECTS credits to be approved. It is a requirement that you have a supervisor at the sending university. Still, there is no requirement for a supervisor at the receiving university, but it is a strong recommendation.

No ECTS credits are required from the host university, but the mobility must be registered and recognised. The department assesses how many points the exchange corresponds to in your doctoral education. This should also be stated in your individual study plan, ISP. The studies must be carried out full-time.

Internship

The content of the internship must be relevant to your education. The internship can be carried out in two different forms:

• Non-scoring: You can use the internship for, for example, research experience, data collection, and writing their dissertation.

• Recent graduate: Non-credit internship after graduation. You must apply for the Erasmus internship during your last semester. The entire internship period must be completed within 12 months after the date of the diploma. A student who has applied for and had his/hers degree issued can no longer apply for an internship.

The internship can occur at a company, an organisation, a university, or a research and training centre in a programme country (i.e., within the EU / EEA, and Serbia, Turkey, or Northern Macedonia).

The internship period can be from two to 12 months.

Erasmus + teacher mobility

With a teacher exchange, you as a doctoral student can have the opportunity to teach at a partner university in a programme country. The exchange must last for at least two days and include at least eight teaching hours a week. The exchange must not be longer than eight weeks.

Erasmus + staff training (not research)

Staff training means that you as a doctoral student can shadow a job at a company, an organisation, or a university, participate in workshops, or a shorter course in a programme country. Continuing education should be between two to five working days and be related to your tasks at KTH, but not in research. It must appear in the application that the exchange has a clear connection to your education.
