How well can we optimise computers’ ability to capture, interpret, and understand what they see using digital cameras? This research question is fundamental to the field of computer vision - a highly interdisciplinary field that includes everything from hardware for sensing the surroundings to computational learning theory for recognising captured images.
Atsuto Maki’s recent research interest is in designing algorithms that can be used for making efficient models for computer vision. The field is undergoing rapid development, and the goal would be to create computer systems with vision comparable to that of humans.
At the same time, certain new technologies and applications, such as self-driving cars, need to be able to see and understand the scene even better than that. In this respect, Maki’s research group is also in close collaboration with industrial partners for several application areas such as quality inspection in smart manufacturing and classification of sonar data.
Research in those domains naturally involves AI as well as understanding of so-called deep learning. The research group contributes to increasing knowledge in the field.
