The mission and vision of Learning

The Department of Learning aims to become a leader in engineering science didactics at all levels of education. Through linking research findings to innovation, organisational change, new technical and pedagogical methods, the institution contributes to future learning with its research and development in the fields of digital learning resources and environments, learning and teaching in technology, mathematics, science at the university and in higher education learning, communication and organisation in higher education in general and in the field of technology education in particular.

We are The Department of Learning

Operational assignments

As part of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the School of Industrial Engineering and Management (ITM), the Department of Learning has the task of driving social change through education, research and collaboration in technology and learning to contribute to a better tomorrow.

Vision and goals

The vision for working at the Department of Learning is to become leaders in the field of engineering science pedagogy. When someone has questions about “best practice”, it is our institution they think of and turn to first.

The goal of our research and development is to become national as well as international leaders in pedagogical development of engineering education at all levels of education.

A thoughtful approach to lifelong learning is important for the future and Sweden. It is therefore important to:

  • Contribute to greater integration of learning beyond traditional education.
  • Develop e-learning and provide new forms of education through the digitization of learning.
  • Reduce distance and strengthen ties between university and working life

A holistic approach to learning

The department has developed research into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning and digital learning in order to take a holistic approach to research in learning at all levels, from pre-school to college. Based on this, we teach and develop the teaching of technology and science. Particularly important here is our cooperation with non-university actors through the House of Science.

By linking research findings to innovation, organisational change and new technical and pedagogical methods, the institution contributes to the future's learning with its research and development in the following areas:

  • Digital learning resources and environments,
  • Learning and teaching in engineering, mathematics, science at school and in higher education
  • Learning, communication and organisation in higher education in general and in the field of technology education in particular

Development plan

During KTH’s period for development plan 2018-2023 and up to KTH’s Vision 2027, the Department of Learning will work to increase the research base and create a strong, well-known and competitive research and education environment.

Organisation

Learning activities are organized into three divisions and a centre that supports teaching and innovation in its field of research.
