How can organizational learning and employee-driven environmental initiatives contribute to the green transition? While research on the green transition has primarily focused on innovative technological solutions, much less attention has been given to workplace dynamics, according to Afa Försäkring. The organization is providing SEK 5.7 million in funding to Matti Kaulio , Professor at INDEK, to develop a network model for organizational learning and employee-led environmental efforts among operators and production teams.

“The green transition in industry demands significant adaptability in products, production processes, and work methods. Responsibility for environmental issues is often placed with support functions rather than within the line organization. However, driving real change requires a different approach—one that leverages the cognitive capacity of the entire organization,” explains Matti Kaulio. “The demands for green transition and employee-driven development initiatives can also lead to improvements in the social and organizational work environment.”

“Our research aims to contribute to healthier, climate-smart workplaces and a more engaging work environment. The study is expected to refine the network model for organizational learning and facilitate employee-driven improvement initiatives, which can ultimately lead to better health outcomes and reduced absenteeism,” Kaulio adds.

The project, conducted in collaboration with Volvo, includes leadership coaching for managers as a key component.
